Instead of spending money to monitor and maintain the levees, Congress will have spent billions to repair New Orleans after the levees collapsed.
Instead of spending money to monitor and maintain our bridges, Congress has agreed to spend lots more to rebuild the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed last week.
I have this idea. Let’s blow up (or blow down, to be precise) the Peace Bridge.
Give everyone a 60-minute warning. Then proclaim a miracle that no one got hurt, and demand that Congress do something about the decrepit nature of our infrastructure.
The politicians will point a few fingers and then provide millions in Federal funding with promises to have the new bridge built in no time.
It worked in New Orleans and it worked in Minnesota; it should work for us.
